Kids

Round at a mate's this weekend, culminating in a barbecue party last night. Many small children were in attendance, vying for alpha status. This observation from Kilcullen sprang to mind:
But children are sharp-eyed, lacking in empathy, and willing to commit atrocities their elders would shrink from.

Exactly. There is a similar observation over at No Minister from Psycho Milt. Social values are not instinctive - children need to be taught them. Parents who are absent either physically, mentally or emotionally from their children are more or less guaranteeing their children will be dysfunctional misfits whose grasp of civilised mores is weak or non-existent.

They are the source of recidivist criminals and, worse, investment bankers.

It's a bit more complex than that, but leading by example seems to work with the little monkeys.
